Is it really necessary to use Disavow tool available in Google Search Console?
Disavow Tool is not recommended for most of the websites as Google suggests.
Google strictly recommends to use this option if and only if you feel there is certainty for your website to have a manual action or already penalized with manual action.
How To Check If Your Website Has Manual Action
Google lets you know if your website has manual action through Search Console.
To check, login to Google Search Console check the 'Security & Manual Actions' drop down provided in the menu list that is placed in the left-side of the Search Console. Refer the image below for better idea.
Under the Tab Security & Manual Actions, click on Manual Actions which will tell you if there is any manual action has been held or Google confirms with a message saying No Issues Detected.
If you have a manual action
If you notice a manual action under this tab then it is time to react.
To start with disavow tool, first you need to identify the backlinks of your website. This can be done by navigating to Links option in the same search console tool (refer the same image to find out Links)
After you click on Links, tool displays list of external links, internal links, top linking sites and top linking texts.
On the top right corner, you will have an option to Export External Links. You can export them and check what type of backlinks you are getting to your website and from which domains.
If you have a doubt, that the recent increase in backlinks has caused a manual action. Then you can export the Latest Links
Once downloaded you should be able to cross check the backlinks and identify the spam links. An SEO expert will come in handy for this job.
Filtering the good domains and spam domains is the next task you need to pick up.
Once your list is done. Then you need to prepare a disavow file.
There are two formats that you need to know while preparing disavow file.
Creating A Disavow File
Google recommends the following format
- Mention each domain in a single line in a notepad.
- To disavow a domain (or subdomain) prefix it with "domain:", for example: domain:example.com
- The file must be a text file encoded in UTF-8 or 7-bit ASCII
- The file name must end in .txt
- If you are mentioning URL path to disavow, make sure maximum URL length is 2,048 characters
- Maximum file size is 100,000 lines (including blank lines and comment lines) and 2MB.

Once your disavow file is ready, you can upload it using the following tool - https://search.google.com/search-console/disavow-links
Precautions To Be Taken While Disavow
- Make sure you don't disavow a good domain.
- If you are not certain if the domain is good or spam. I recommend you to leave the domain from adding into disavow list. (Because Google is capable of understanding a good and bad domain)
- Google is pretty smart in identifying the domain and is capable enough to think on to pass link juice from which website and not to allow to pass from which domain.
